Pictoword School supports students' vocabulary development of K-6 English Learners through picture-based word puzzles. The word puzzles reinforce students understanding of the meaning of the word, use of the word in a sentence, and spelling and pronunciation of the word.

Pictoword School predicts student engagement using Machine Learning. If a student is disengaged, Pictoword School gives a word puzzle that re-engages the student. If a student is engaged but struggling, Pictoword School gives an easier word puzzle with similar words.

Tailored educational content

Pictoword School covers over 500 grade-specific vocabulary words from a variety of K-6 academic vocabulary lists from reading programs and textbooks. Teachers also have the flexibility to add custom words and create custom puzzle packs in the teacher dashboard to tailor their vocabulary instruction.

Classroom and Playground Modes

Pictoword School offers two modes of learning. Classroom Mode is designed with teacher-led, group instruction in mind. As an alternative to Classroom Mode, teachers could use Playground Mode, a freeplay mode that enables students to solve puzzles on their own, during free time in school or at home.

In-App Dictionary

Pictoword School includes an interactive and personalized dictionary that is accessible to students at all times. The dictionary displays rich information about the word and comes with auditory support and translation features available in Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and Vietnamese.

Pictoword School is accompanied by a Teacher Dashboard where teachers can track student progress and view student performance that inform their vocabulary instruction.

Research Backed Vocabulary Learning

Pictoword School is funded in part by a  Department of Education IES SBIR Phase I grant .  An external evaluation of Pictoword School by WestEd showed promise for increasing vocabulary knowledge for elementary school English Language Learners (ELLs) after using Pictoword School for a month. Students reported that they liked using Pictoword School and would like to continue using it. Teachers also reported observing high student engagement and felt that the Pictoword School presented a new mode of learning that excited students.
